Glorija Lizde

A memory quilt, traditionally crafted as a handmade keepsake to preserve family history during significant life transitions, serves as the foundation for Lizde's work, Family portrait. Following her departure from the family home, Lizde began creating her own quilt, stitching together fragments of personal clothing and textiles imbued with meaning from her formative years. Interwoven with these fabrics are photographs representing four generations of her family, creating a deeply personal narrative.

The textiles in the piece include bed sheets and home textiles alongside garments worn throughout her life, symbolizing both continuity and change. The quilt also addresses the fragmentation of family memory following her parents' divorce, which led to the division of family photo albums between two households. To reflect this split, Lizde sewed the photographs into the quilt using threads of two distinct colors, representing the two sides of her family. Through this act of creation, she reunites these scattered fragments, gathering them into a single, cohesive work that speaks to identities and the passage of time.
